SIMMS the Hard Way

Hi,

We're going to be training about 60 teachers next week for SIMMS Levels 1, 2, and 3. I can't imagine a less auspicious start. We haven't gotten the texts (which were "rush" ordered about six weeks ago . . .), no materials kits, and we've been bumped from our large conference room to a much smaller one. The only good thing is that we have a great consultant - Sue.

This should be most interesting.

From Kathy, the frustrated supervisor.

  1. Kathy I am sorry I can not be there. I know that Sue has been in contact with KH and hopefully materials will arrive. Please feel free to contact me as much as you need next week. I will be thinking of you. jim

  2. Kathy, maybe you can print copies (from electronic files) of selected modules if the texts are not readily available. As far as kits go, basic materials (rulers, protractors, scissors, etc.) are probably things you have around and then teachers could bring other items needed. Just a thought...

  3. It's not unlike the unexpected challenges we face in the classroom. Thank goodness we've learned to be good at adaptations. I'm gettring really excited about the week. Such a great group of teachers. I think the week will be great and Kathy you have been awesom. All will be well!

  4. Indeed those circumstances are frustrating. There is some good news--folks at Kelly Walsh High School in Casper, WY, implemented ALL four Levels of SIMMS several years ago and are successful. It is a more difficult process but it can work.

I know in the case of the Casper school, their thinking was they had to get good mathematics to as many students as possible as soon as possible--and it has worked.

Ask for advice anytime--lots of folks will come with suggestions.

  5. We will do our best in NH to get our materials out to share with you as soon as possible. Best of luck with implementation. Stay positive and work together to support each other.
